Carlie Lau
M.Sc. Student

Carlie was an M.Sc. student in the Department of Environment & Geography at The University of Manitoba. She completed her Honours and Master’s degrees advised by Dr. Mark Hanson. Her research focused on studying the recovery potential of aquatic primary producers after herbicide exposure.

During her Honours project, Carlie conducted laboratory testing to determine the toxicity of atrazine, a herbicide, on duckweed with different exposure durations and assessed the recovery of duckweed following the exposure.

In her master’s thesis, Carlie evaluated published studies on the recovery of aquatic primary producers after herbicide exposure. Additionally, she conducted testing on recovery potential of duckweed following exposure to herbicide, specifically 2,4-D and atrazine in laboratory. The data collected was compared with concentrations in guidelines and it suggested that duckweed is unlikely to experience adverse effects and could be protected from such exposure.

Carlie is currently exploring career opportunities in environmental consulting.
