Luis’ PhD thesis investigated the occurrence, fate and removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater through constructed wetlands in rural and remote locations. His work was one of the first to study the performance of wetland-based wastewater treatment in an Arctic community. Also, his dissertation addressed the use low-cost materials as substrates for alternative wastewater treatment. Currently, Luis is a faculty member of the school of chemistry at Tecnológico de Costa Rica, his home country. Luis’ work there focuses on teaching and research in the field of environmental chemistry.
